Robotic sorting and welding cell

Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática, University of Seville — Robotics and Automation course (2nd part) · Co-project lead

A simulated manufacturing cell in ABB RobotStudio with three IRB 6640 robots, built in collaboration, on equal footing, with Ignacio Cáceres Plaza.

The system randomly generates three types of part (short, long, and a “company cube”) at one end of a conveyor belt and sorts them at the other end using line sensors. The first robot picks up short parts and places them on a welding table; once two short parts are waiting, the second robot welds them into a long part. Long parts — welded or generated as such — are stacked into a tower at the storage table, while company cubes are discarded on a separate belt, handled by the third robot through an interrupt routine that moves the other two robots to a safe position while the cube is removed.

Communication between the three robots relies on digital I/O signals (part-available, rest-position, pickup confirmation) and robot-specific RAPID routines.
