Constellation Forge

NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024, Seville local event — «Exosky!» challenge · Collaborator

A solution to the «Exosky!» challenge at the 2024 NASA Space Apps Challenge, at the Seville local event: a tool that reconstructs the starry sky as it would look from an exoplanet, and lets users trace their own constellations over it.

Starting from the chosen exoplanet’s right ascension, declination and parallax (NASA Exoplanet Archive) and the surrounding stellar data (Gaia Archive), the team transforms the positions into coordinates relative to the exoplanet and cross-checks them against the SIMBAD database to verify star identities. The result is served as JSON files feeding a Three.js 3D visualization capable of drawing thousands of stars in a navigable skybox; on top of that view, anyone can select stars to link into named constellations of their own, and export or import them as JSON.
